Put coffee grounds in an accepted organics collection, add them to a balanced home compost pile, or place them in the trash. Keep grounds out of sinks, garbage disposals, and toilets.
Composting is usually the most useful household route when you have a suitable system. Grounds count as nitrogen-rich “greens,” so they need dry carbon-rich material and air.
Choose a Disposal Route
Where your grounds can go
- Local organics: Use it only if the current accepted-items list includes coffee grounds and filters.
- Home compost: Mix grounds with dry leaves, shredded uncoated paper, or another brown material.
- Trash: Let very wet grounds drain, then contain them so they do not spill.
Paper filters can go with the grounds when your compost or organics program accepts them. Remove plastic pods, metal foil, staples, and produce-style stickers.
Programs differ on compostable bags and coffee pods. A compostable label does not guarantee your collector or home pile accepts the product.
Keep Grounds Out of Plumbing
Coffee grounds do not dissolve in water. They can collect with grease and other debris, contributing to clogs in household drains and sewer lines.
Scrape the grounds into a container before washing the brewer. A sink strainer can catch the small amount left behind.
Do not flush grounds into a septic system. They add solids that the tank must retain and eventually have pumped out.
Add Coffee Grounds to Home Compost
EPA lists coffee grounds and paper filters among nitrogen-rich compost ingredients. Combine them with carbon-rich browns rather than building a dense layer of grounds.
USDA suggests roughly two to three parts brown material to one part green material by volume. Treat that as a starting range, then watch the pile.
If the pile smells sour or feels soggy, add dry browns and turn it. If it stays dry and inactive, check moisture and mix the ingredients.
Bury fresh food scraps within the pile and use a secure system where rodents are a concern.
Use Finished Compost, Not Piles of Grounds
Finished compost is a more dependable soil amendment than repeatedly dumping fresh grounds around a plant.
Grounds vary in acidity after brewing and still affect soil structure. Large direct applications can mat together and interfere with water and air movement.
Apply cured compost according to the plant and soil, especially in containers. More is not automatically better.
