The Starbucks cup in your hand may be recyclable. Its label and your local program settle the question.
Current US plastic cold cups have broad recycling access. Hot paper cups and locally required compostable cups still need an exact local check.
Identify the Cup Before Choosing a Bin
Look at the cup’s material, printed disposal label, and components. Starbucks packaging can differ by drink, store, and local government requirements.
A recycling or compostability claim describes a possible processing route. Your curbside, workplace, airport, or store program must also accept that exact package.
Plastic Cold Cups
In February 2026, Starbucks announced that polypropylene to-go cups had earned a “Widely Recyclable” designation, meaning more than 60 percent of US households had access.
The designation does not put every Starbucks cold cup in every recycling bin. Check the label and confirm your local program accepts plastic cups or the listed resin.
Empty the cup before recycling. Follow local instructions for the lid, straw, stopper, and any other piece because small accessories may use another material.
Paper Hot Cups
Hot cups often combine paper fiber with a moisture barrier. Some US recycling programs accept paper cups, while others exclude them.
Monroe County, New York, accepts empty hot and cold paper cups.
Kane County, Illinois, accepts empty paper food-service cups but excludes lids, straws, and stirrers.
Those examples show that paper-cup recycling exists. They do not establish a national rule, so check the program where you will place the cup.
If accepted, empty the cup and follow instructions for the lid and sleeve. A clean cardboard sleeve may have a separate paper-recycling route.
Commercially Compostable Cups
Starbucks uses commercially compostable cups and lids in a small number of US stores because of local requirements.
Put one in organics only when it is marked for that route and the receiving program accepts that certification and item. Do not place it in ordinary paper recycling.
If no suitable commercial composting service accepts it, use the disposal route shown by your local program. “Compostable” does not always mean suitable for a backyard pile.
Can You Reuse a Disposable Cup?
A single-use cup may work briefly as a dry-material scoop or paint-water cup, but food reuse and heating are outside its intended design.
Do not bake in a Starbucks paper cup, plant it in soil, or shred a lined cup into compost.
Reuse only for a low-risk purpose that does not involve heat or food, then follow the correct local disposal route.
Bring a Reusable Cup Next Time
Starbucks accepts clean personal cups at US company-operated and participating licensed stores, including cafe, drive-thru, and mobile orders.
Tell the barista you brought a personal cup and provide it without the lid. For a mobile order, choose the personal-cup option in the app.
