A helium cylinder is a pressurized container, even when it feels light. Identify the brand and model first, check its condition, then follow only that manufacturer’s emptying instructions.
Local programs differ sharply. Some accept a properly prepared disposable tank as scrap, while others exclude cylinders from curbside carts and household hazardous-waste sites.
Check the Cylinder Before You Touch the Valve
Read the label from a safe position. Record the manufacturer, product name, cylinder size, ownership markings, and any return or exchange instructions.
If the cylinder is refillable, rented, unidentified, badly rusted, bulging, damaged, or leaking unexpectedly, do not use disposable-tank instructions. Do not puncture it or put it in a vehicle.
Keep people away and contact the supplier, manufacturer, or local fire department for condition-specific advice.

Check the Balloon Time MINI Recall
CPSC recalled certain Balloon Time MINI helium tanks in November 2023 because the compressed-gas nozzle could eject. The notice identifies affected colors, size, sale dates, and refund steps.
If your MINI tank may match, read the recall notice before normal use or disposal preparation. Follow the recall remedy and complete any refund documentation before discarding it.
Prepare a Balloon Time MINI Tank
These steps apply only to a sound, nonrecalled Balloon Time MINI disposable tank whose label matches the current manufacturer instructions.
Wear safety glasses and gloves. Work outside or in a well-ventilated area, then tilt the black nozzle until no gas comes out.
Place a wrench on the flat grooves below the nozzle and turn counterclockwise. If you hear hissing, stop and wait until it ends.
Continue loosening only after the hissing stops. Once the nozzle is completely unscrewed, remove it by hand.
Balloon Time says the prepared MINI tank may then follow local solid-waste recycling or disposal instructions. Confirm the exact receiving route before taking it anywhere.
Prepare a Balloon Time MEDIUM or JUMBO Tank
These different steps apply only to a sound Balloon Time MEDIUM or JUMBO disposable tank covered by the manufacturer’s current page.
Wear safety glasses and gloves. Fully open the green valve, then press the tilt nozzle until the hissing stops.
Unscrew the white valve nut and remove the tilt nozzle. Follow the manufacturer’s illustrated method to lift, peel back, and discard the small punch-out disk.
Circle the opening and write EMPTY on the tank. Do not transfer this punch-out method to a MINI tank, another brand, or a refillable cylinder.
Confirm a Local Destination
Call your municipal solid-waste program or scrap facility before preparation or travel. Give the exact brand, model, size, condition, and whether the manufacturer’s empty indicator is visible.
Ask whether the site accepts empty disposable helium tanks, which preparation it requires, whether curbside collection is excluded, and whether an appointment or fee applies.
Houston excludes tanks from curbside trash and recycling. Cuyahoga County also excludes them from curbside service and directs properly emptied retail helium tanks toward scrap-metal outlets.
Those are local examples, not national rules. Your program may use a different route or may refuse the tank entirely.
Store the Tank While You Arrange Handoff
Keep an unprepared cylinder upright, secured from falling, away from heat, and out of children’s reach. Do not leave it loose in a vehicle.
Never burn, crush, drill, or improvise a valve-removal method. An apparently empty cylinder can still be pressurized.
